How Are Essential Oils Produced?

Sandstouch Essential Oils
Distillation

The majority of Sandstouch essential oils are extracted from the plants by steam distillation.

This process involves passing steam through the plant material that contains the essential oil, either roots, twigs, leaves, fruit or a combination of elements. The steam breaks down the oil cells and causes evaporated oil to rise with the steam to the top of the container.

There the evaporated essential oil enters a pipe leading to a second container where both it and the steam cool, becoming liquid again.

The essential oil floats on top of the water and is drawn off and collected.

 Enfleurage

Sandstouch Jasmine essential oil is produced by the time-consuming but chemical free method of enfleurage to create what is called an absolute oil, one which is highly concentrated and has a very powerful scent. One drop of the absolute goes a very, very long way.

In the enfleurage method, jasmine petals are placed on a thin layer of purified fat laid on sheets of glass held in place by wooden frames. the petals are removed when they have faded and replaced by new ones in a process that can last for several weeks until the fat is entirely saturated with the essence of the jasmine.

The mixture of fat and essential oil is called a pomade and this is washed in alcohol and separated by evaporation and vibration to leave the jasmine absolute.
